In October 2023, Stanford University and Elsevier Data Repository released the Stanford University Top 2 Scientists List, a list of the world’s top 2% scientists.

The list is the result of a project between Elsevier and the team of Professor John P. A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, and is published on Mendeley Data, a website owned by Elsevier. The list is based on a systematic analysis of citation data from the Scopus database, using six composite scores (composite score, C-score) such as the number of citations (distinguishing between self-citations and citations by others, providing self-citation data), H-index, HM factor, etc., and selects the top 2% of scientists in the world from nearly 7 million scientists based on “career influence” and “annual influence”, divided into 22 fields and 176 sub-fields, providing a measurement indicator for scientists’ long-term scientific research performance, which can more objectively and truly reflect the influence of scientists.
